Bannack

PORTRAITS

Most of these picture were edited simple with Lightroom. For most of them I used a genearl atuo tone, punch, sharpening and tone curve. I adjust them until I really like the picture. Sometimes I adjust the saturation of select colors to give more vibrance or more focus in pictures. When taking these portraits I generally tried to catch people doing something interesting. My favorite poses are candid ones.

Portrait Boy: 25/5/2011; 12:19pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/1,250; Canon PowerShot SX130

I caught this little by while I was walking by. I just snapped a picture at him randomly and ended up liking the angel.

Portrait Side Shot: 25/5/2011; 1:10pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/15; Canon PowerShot SX130

This picture took a bit more work. I tried different filters and really like this creative Black and White one. There was too much light in the picture so I cropped the excess out. I then made Cody the focus of the picture by capturing what he was doing.

Portrait Behind Shot: 25/5/2011; 1:10pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/8; Canon PowerShot SX130

I used the same concept as the previous picture but this time I had the person in the chair be more of the focus.  I feel the taller longer picture brings more focus and action to what is going on. I feel it give the room a taller look.

Portrait Candid: 25/5/2011; 11:17pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/500; Canon PowerShot SX130

I saw Brittany taking pictures so I got Huston to pose taking pictures of her. I wanted to have a picture representing what I was doing to people.  Also it gives them both a portrait style picture. Also blue colors are in a triangular pattern which helps build the picture. I tried cropping it down to their level but the loss of blue threw the picture off. I felt unstable.

Portrait Barman: 25/5/2011; 1:25pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

I used a sepia filter and adjusted the lighting to it gave him a more old fashion rustic look. I only had a point and shoot so I had to use my fill light on low to get good lighting.

Portrait Eyes: 25/5/2011; 1:27pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

She was talking in this picture she her mouth looked funny. So I just decided I would keep the  picture and use her eyes which have a knowing look to them. I tried to crop different parts of her body and put them all together like a mosaic but it didn't work. It just looked strange. I put more leading space in front of her face because her eyes draw you that direction and I wanted to give you something more to look at.

Portrait Woman: 25/5/2011; 1:27pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

The window gave great lighting for her body and face. I had white space above her head and cut off her knees to give  more focus to her face. Also her arms and body are leading lines to her face which then points you out of the picture into the unknown (or just your own thoughts. Its a pondering piece).

Portrait Man: 25/5/2011; 1:37pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/80; Canon PowerShot SX130

I got low and too the shot up. I loved the lighting that I got off his face. This picture didn't really need any kind of editing.

Portrait Yesteryear: 25/5/2011; 1:38pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/50; Canon PowerShot SX130

I put a Yesteryear filter on it to give it an interesting effect. It made the picture too bright so I took a tool brush and lowered the exposure on the over bright areas.

Portrait Black and White: 25/5/2011; 1:38pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/50; Canon PowerShot SX130

I used a creative Black and White filter for this one. I got low so his knees were even with me which gave added depth to him leaning back.

Portrait Wall Veiw: 25/5/2011; 1:50pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

I used the wall to bring focus to her smile. The wall is one of the first things you notice but since it has dull colors her shirt draws more attention and wins the battle over your eyes.

Portrait Side Glance: 25/5/2011; 12:51pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

There was a tripod in the back ground so I cropped it out and also cropped out the table that her leg was resting on. It gave more focus to her.

ACTION BLUR & FREEZE

For these pictures I did the same general editing as the portraits. For action freeze I looked for things that normal move around, such as a dog playing fetch, the wind blowing wheat and even a cat sneaking around. To get the blur or "ghost" effects I set my shutter to stay open for about 2 seconds then run like mad around the room.

Action Blur & Freeze Catch: 25/5/2011; 12:03pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/640; Canon PowerShot SX130

I was lucky the park ranger was playing fetch with this overly excited dog. When the toy was thrown I would focus on where it landed and hold the shutter halfway down so I could take an instant picture.

Action Blur & Freeze Micro Grass: 25/5/2011; 12:03pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/320; Canon PowerShot SX130

I let my camera focus on the grass so I could have some blurred action on the background.

Action Blur & Freeze Return: 25/5/2011; 12:03pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/640; Canon PowerShot SX130

I angled and cropped this picture so it looks like he is running fast than he is. Also the grass was distracting because it was blurry in the fore ground. That was another reason I cropped it.

Action Blur & Freeze Grassy Wind: 25/5/2011; 12:07pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/400; Canon PowerShot SX130

I got low to take this one and get this angle.

Action Blur & Freeze Catch: 25/5/2011; 5:34pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

Caught the lurker cat as he was sneaking away.

Action Blur & Freeze HDR Ghost: 25/5/2011; 6:12pm; Bannack, MT; f 8; 2; Canon PowerShot SX130

I used a self timmer that took 5 picture at a time and just ran around. I had to set it on the floor because I didn't have a tripod. I got it to angle up by putting a spare batter under it.

Action Blur & Freeze Ghost Hallway: 25/5/2011; 6:10pm; Bannack, MT; f 8; 2; Canon PowerShot SX130

Same concept, different picture.

REVERSE SHALLOW DEPTH

For these I looked for two objects that were far away and interesting to look at. I center focused on a closer object then took a picture of my subject. Then I did the reverse to get the background in focus.

Reverse Shallow Depth Wood House Shallow: 25/5/2011; 1:51pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/320; Canon PowerShot SX130

I like the background colors and how the go together. Also my angel was to make it feel like you are just peering over the log.

Reverse Shallow Depth Wood House Deep: 25/5/2011; 1:51pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/640; Canon PowerShot SX130

Reverse Shallow Depth Fence Shallow: 25/5/2011; 2:22pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/800; Canon PowerShot SX130

I set the camera down on the fence to get an interesting leading angel to the crowd.I focused on the side of the fence then moved the camera into place.

Reverse Shallow Depth Fence Deep: 25/5/2011; 2:22pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/800; Canon PowerShot SX130

Reverse Shallow Depth Cable Shallow: 25/5/2011; 5:30pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/100; Canon PowerShot SX130

I found a little cove which ran to some water. I really liked the color of this cable and hows it rusted over. It blended well with the river and contrasted the green plant.

MACRO ABSTRACT

I used photoshop to blend these to picture together. I used a mask to bring out certain feature while hiding others.

Macro Abstract: International Leafy Truck

For this one I brought the "international" out completely by masking out the top layer (which is the leaves). I made the whole leaf layer's opacity about 80 percent. Then I just used a brush to paint on a making layer and made the lower half of the picture really strong. This allowed more of the truck to come out. Also the colors were similar so they blended well.

Macro Abstract Truck: 25/5/2011; 5:53pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/50; Canon PowerShot SX130

Macro Abstract Leaves: 25/5/2011; 5:04pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/125; Canon PowerShot SX130

Macro Abstract: Hanged Man

I really wanted to have something to do with the famous hanging in town. So I had a picture of my arm on the ground  facing towards where they used to hang people. Then I found a small skeletion that was part of the popsicle display and cut it out and place it onto this picture. I also used a masking layer and just cut all the unwanted skeletion picture out. I also did match color to try and make the skeletion picture blend better with the hand picture.

Macro Abstract Hanged: 25/5/2011; 3:22pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/40; Canon PowerShot SX130

LANDSCAPE QEA

This is where I took a picture by metering off of different areas. I didn't do much editing to these and left them as they were.
Landscape QEA Town: 25/5/2011; 5:44pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/125; Canon PowerShot SX130

HDR

I used DynamicPhoto to make these picture. I usually took 5 pictures to have more of a range of colors for the program to work with. But I think that the standard 3 works just as well. As I put picture into Dynamic Photo clicked different setting until I found one I really liked.

HDR Bottles 5 Pictures: 25/5/2011; 3:10pm; Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/30-50-160-320-800; Canon PowerShot SX130

This was my 1st attempt and I really liked it. I simply put the camera on the counter and took 5 shots with different exposures. What made this picture so successful was the variety of colors. HDR works well with different colors.

Fun Filter for Previous Picture

I tried a filter that made it looked old fashion. I though it was an interesting take on it.  I think the upward angels really helps this.

HDR Ghost Batteries 5 Pictures: 25/5/2011; 6:06pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/80-40-20-10-5; Canon PowerShot SX130

This one interesting because I moved my batter every-time I took a shot so I ended up with a ghost battery. Again I just set my camera on the ground.

HDR Graveyard Boardin' 1 Shot: 25/5/2011; 6:44pm; Bannack, MT; f 5.6; 1/800; Canon EOS Rebel T2i

I didn't take this but I did put it into HDR. I got an extreme background color but it made my skin look funny. So I made another one with normal skin and put them into photoshop and masked out the funny skin color.

HDR Ancient iPod 8 Shots: 25/5/2011; 12:37pm; Bannack, MT; f 8; 2.5- 1.6 sec; Canon PowerShot SX130

This was a failed attempt at a ghost shot. I didn't really like any of them so I just put them all into HDR for fun. So it "wasn't too late" and I made it into an interesting picture. I put the iPod in an old can and got that metallic look off of it.

HDR gPod (ghost pod) 8 Shots: 25/5/2011; 12:37pm; Bannack, MT; f 8; 2.5- 1.6 sec; Canon PowerShot SX130

I just change the hue to green and it had more of a ghosty look.

HDR Snowboard? 3 Shots: 25/5/2011; 12:31pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/60-160-640; Canon PowerShot SX130

HDR Fence 5 Shots: 25/5/2011; 12:53pm; Bannack, MT; f6.3-4.5-4.3-3.4; 1/1250-1000-500-250; Canon PowerShot SX130

I used an interesting angel to get a nice HDR. The fence let the picture be stable so I could change my exposure  easy.

HDR Shadow Burn 1 Shot: 25/5/2011; 2:17pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/250; Canon PowerShot SX130

This was my shadow and I wanted to make it look like it was burnt into the ground. I increased the contrast to get this effect.

FAVORITES

Favorites Bannack Panoramic 7 Shot: 25/5/2011; 3:47pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/1250-1000; Canon PowerShot SX13.

I did a panoramic to get this picture. I just sat down and took picture from one side of the street to the other. That is why the road is so curved.
Bannack Panoramic Sepia.

I wanted to show the orignal before it so you could compare and contrast it to see which you like the most. I feel this gives it more of a classic look which is appropriate for the time period of the town.

Favorites Footprint Pathway: 25/5/2011; 12:57pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/320; Canon PowerShot SX130

I wanted to get a sense of travel here because it is a old town. So I got lower of the angel and put the door in the background to get a sense of journey.

Favorites Coming Home: 25/5/2011; 1:03pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/250; Canon PowerShot SX130

I wanted to see everyday items in this old town. Modern verse history. Interesting contrast.

Favorites Hotel Popsicle: 25/5/2011; 3:25pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/20; Canon PowerShot SX130

I cropped this and made it black and white so it looked more like a real building.

Favorites Old Spice: 25/5/2011; 1:56pm; Bannack, MT; f 5.6; 1/160; Canon PowerShot SX130

Old Spice is epic. And its color matches the background very nicely. They might buy this picture off of my :)

Favorites Silhouette : 25/5/2011; 3:33pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/250; Canon PowerShot SX130

Self timer and I walked to the door. The contrast is great to give a eye catching effect.
Sepia filter to make it look more old fashion. I like the effect better. The windows and door way were too bright to I took a brush and painted the exposure down.

Favorites Mosey Along : 25/5/2011; 2:28pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/500; Canon PowerShot SX130

Cropped the class down to give more focus on us travelling.

Favorites Happy : 25/5/2011; 3:43pm; Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/800; Canon PowerShot SX130

I just like the happy little guy. He is really out of place but I think it is fun. And his yellow really pops against the plaining background. If you are wondering what happened to his head, well... we took him shooting one day.

Favorites Sign Black and White : 25/5/2011; 3:13pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/10; Canon PowerShot SX130

I liked this old sign. It was really interesting so I got down low next to it to get an good angel. I made it black and white to give more contrast and focus on the age of the sign.

Favorites Leafed Denim: 25/5/2011; 5:09pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/60; Canon PowerShot SX130

As I sat down I really like how my pants contrasted the leaves. Blue and orange are complementary colors.

Favorites Marsh : 25/5/2011; 5:13pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/250; Canon PowerShot SX130

The swamp had good colors. I got down low to the grown for some good bocha action.

Favorites Peace Like a River : 25/5/2011; 5:29pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/400; Canon PowerShot SX130

I angled down so the river seemed to flow more.

Favorites Bend : 25/5/2011; 5:31pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/160; Canon PowerShot SX130

The colors are a good contrast to each other. I like the oranges and the greens. The river is kind of neutral so it lets the other two colors stand out.

Favorites From Behind the Rock : 25/5/2011; 5:33pm; Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/125; Canon PowerShot SX130

Another angel of a good picture.

Favorites Ghost Boarder : 25/5/2011; 6:18pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.5; 1/400; Canon PowerShot SX130

I wanted to use my snowboard so I made it look like a ghost was snowboarding. It is cheesy but fun. This is to look like a rail slide and I made the angle so it looks like it is in more action.

Favorites House : 25/5/2011; 6:19pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/500; Canon PowerShot SX130

The house had great color and were complemented by the green next to it.

Favorite Vibrant iPod 8 Shots: 25/5/2011; 12:37pm; Bannack, MT; f 8; 2.5- 1.6 sec; Canon PowerShot SX130

I change the saturation of the red to be all the way up. It made a good contrast for the green by having a popping red. I also highlighted the background with a little red for more vibrance.

Favorites Self Portrait: 25/5/2011; 3:33pm; Bannack, MT; f 3.4; 1/80; Canon PowerShot SX130

This is my favorite. I took a picture of myself in a random window. It caught the colors behind me very nicely. I  used Dynamic Photo on it and it gave me the picture. I love it the way it was then wanted to see what would happen if I put it in Lightroom. And it mad the colors even more vibrant and I love the picture even more. I also look like a ghost which is great shot for Bannack.

I feel this picture captures my whole experience.
